Family history

Richard William Charles Humphreys was born in 1876 at Bethnall Green he was the son of Richard Willaim a wagon builder and Catherine Humphreys née Smith of 22 Mark Street, Stratford, Essex

His father Richard William was born in 1853 at Bethnal Grren his mother Catherine Smith was born in 1852 at Bethnal Green, they were married in 1874 at Islington and went on to have 8 children.

Richard William Charles married his first wife Charlotte Conrad born 1881 , they were married on 3rd April 1904 at St John's church Hackney, they had two children, Richard Frederick born 22nd May 1906 and Charles born 5th September 1907.

Following the death of his first wife Charlotte he married Bertha Goodacre (born 31st March 1889 she died in 1917 ) they were married in 1915 at Nottingham, they lived at 1 Turner Street St Ann's Nottingham they went on to have a daughter Dora born 23rd March 1916.

In the 1911 census he is shown as being 35 yrs a battery sergeant major with the 37th battaery Royal Field Artillery, at Burford Camp, Salisbury.

Commencing 24th June 1918 his widow Bertha was awarded a pension of 47 shillings a week.

Military history

Regimental Sergeant Major Richard Humphreys enlisted at Woolwich, he served with the 37th battaery Royal Field Artillery, he died on 11th December 1917 at the Military Hospital Aylsbury of carcenoma of the lungs, he is buried at Woodgrave Park Cemetery East Ham
