Horace Howkins was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of William a boot maker and repairer and the late Elizabeth Howkins née Peet and the brother of Harry, Ethel, Joseph, Gertrude, Dorothy and Florrie Howkins of 95 Manning Street Woodborough Road Nottingham.
His father William was born in 1857 at Littlethorpe, Leicestershire, his mother Elizabeth Pett was born in 1857 at Labley,she died in 1914 aged 57 yrs, they were married in 1879 at Nottingham, they had 12 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 95 Manning Street, Nottingham, William 54 yrs is aboot maker and repairer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 54 yrs and their children, Harry 27 yrs a boot repairer, Ethel 22 yrs a lace patter hand, Joseph 19 yrs a sewing machinefitter, Horace 15 yrs a butcher, Gertrude 13 yrs a scholar, Dorothy 12 yrs a scholar and Florrie 10 years old.
Private Horace Howkins enlisted at Nopttingham, he served with the 12th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he landed in France on 9th September 1915. He was killed in action on 25th September 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial
