Family history

George James William Holden was born in 1898 at Nottingham, he was the son of Allen a brick layers labourer and Mary Holden née Ambrose and the brother of Allen, Liza, William, Gladys and Violet Holden.

His father Allen was born in 1874 at Nottingham, his mother Mary Ambrose was born in 1874at Nottingham, they were married on 20th September 1896 at St Ann's, Nottihgam, they had 6 children.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 6 Oxford Square Deligne Street Nottingham, Allen 37 yrs is 37 yrs and is a brick layers labourer he is living with his wife Mary 33 yrs a lace hand and their children, Allen 14 yrs, George 12 yrs, Liza 10 yrs, William 8 yrs, Gladys 5 yrs and Violet Holden 3 yrs.

George married Elizabeth Mary Harrison (born 8th April 1893) in 1913 at Nottingham they lived at 7 Jackson Terrace, Simkin Street, Blue Bell Hill, Nottingham, they had two children George Henry born 15th February 1914 and Rose Elsie born 20th January 1916.

At the time of George's death his wife and family was living at 3 Duke Terrace, Dawson Street, Carlton Road.

His widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence which commenced on 23rd April 1917.

Elizabeth married Robert Holland in 1918 (Jul/Aug/Sep).

Military history

Private George Holden enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the2nd battalion Grenadier Guards he was killed in action on 25th September 1916 and is buried in the Norfolk Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt (grave ref. ll.A.19).
