Family history

Richard was born in 1893 at Hucknall he was baptised on 6th March 1895 at St Johns Church, Hucknall he was the son of Thomas a coal miner and Mary Ann Cooper and the brother of Rachael, Mary Ann, Susannah, Florrie, Annie, John and Agnes Cooper of Hucknall Nottingham.

His father Thomas was born in 1856 at Mosley Hole, Staffordshire, his mother Mary Ann was born in 1871 in Noller, Staffordshire, the were married prior to 1882 and had 7 children.

In the 1911 census he was lodging in Hucknall with George Cole 51 yrs a farm labourer and family.Richard 18 yrs is a farm labourer.

Military history

Private Richard Cooper enlisted at Ilkeston, he served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he probably joined the battalion as a replacement in September 1915. He went to Gallipolli in 1915 and died of wounds at sea aboard Hospital Ship Massilia, 3rd December 1915.

His name ic ommemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey. Panel 150 to 152.
