Family history

George Ernest Fox was born in 1896 at Nottingham, he was the son of Alfred a stamper for the General Post office and the late Helen Fox née Armson of 69 Derby Road Nottingham.

His father Alfred was born in 1865 at Cambridge, his mother Helen Armson was born in 1865 at Nottingham, she died in 1906 aged 39 yrs, they were married on 10th October 1894 at Holy Trinity church, Nottingham. they had a daughter Doris Minnie born 1904.

George's father and sister, Doris, were living at 69 Derby Road, Nottingham, when George was killed. His mother predeceased him.

In 1911 the family was boarding at 152 Dame Agnes Street, St Ann's, Nottingham.

Military history

'C' Coy. He was reported missing after the first day of the Battle of the Somme but his death was not confirmed until the following year. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Theipval Memorial.

Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 15 June 1917: 'Fox. Missing July 1st now reported killed, Private George Ernest Fox, Sherwood Foresters, age 21 (sic), only son of Alfred and the late Helen Fox, 69 Derby Road. Mother, father, sister Doris.'
