Family history

Ernest Hanford was born in 1896 at Nottingham, he was the son of Philip a hosiery worker and Lizza Hanford née Denby and the brother of Philip, Nellie, Arthur, Milly, Tom, Rose, Lucy and Mary Hanford.

His father Phillip was born in 1870 Loughborough, his mother Lizza Denby was born in 1870 also at Loughborough, they were married in 1891 they had 8 children.

They lived at 282 Carlton Road in 1911 and later at 16 Needham's Avenue Thorneywood Lane (both Nottingham)

In the census Phillip 41 yrs a hosiery worker is living with his wife Lizza 41 yrs and their 8 children including Ernest 15 yrs a shop assistant.

Military history

Private Ernest Hanford enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 3rd September 1916 in the attack on the German line at Beaumont Hamel, France during the Battle of the Somme.
He is buried in Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel (grave ref I.D.41)
