Arthur Ernest Foster was born in 1892 at Uppingham, Rutland, he was the son of Samuel Arthur a shop assistant and and Annie Foster née White and the brother of Beatrice, Harry, Joseph Richard, Redvers, George and Frank Foster 22 Sketchley Street, Nottingham.
His father Samuel was born in 1873 at Uppingham, his mother Annie White was born in 1873 also at Uppingham, they were married in 1892 in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 9 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 159 Gordon Road, Nottingham Samuel 38 yrs is a shop assistant, he is living with his wife Annie 40 yrs and their 7 children, including Arthur Ernest19 yrs a wood sawyer.
Arthur Ernest was the husband of Emily May Sims (born 18th May 1891) they were married on 27th January 1916 at St Matthias Church,Nottingham, they lived at 3 Orby Terrace, Woodhouse Street, Nottingham. He was the father of Irene Edna Foster born 13th August 1916.
Commencing 31st December 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week, at this time her address was 30 Blake Street, Gordon Road, Nottingham.
Private Arthur Ernest Foster enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 23rd battalion Northumbland Fusiliers. He was reported missing on 29 April 1917 but his death was not confirmed until the following year. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial
