Family history

William Thomas Cumberpatch was born on 23rd May 1891 at Hyson Green, he was the son of Uriah a labourer and Esther Cumberpatch née Hett of 11 Ratcliff Row Coalpit Lane Nottingham.

His father Uriah was born in 1857 at Northampton, his mother Esther Hett was born in 1863 at Nottingham, they were married on 12th November 1883 in St Ann's, Nottingham they had 12 children, sadly 7 died in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family were living at 11 Ratcliff Row, Nottingham, Esther 48 year is shown as married and head of the houshold, she is living with her children, Uriah 20 yrs a railway clerk, Mary 8 yrs and Lizzie 6 yrs

Military history

Acting Bombardier William Thomas Cumberpatch enlisted on 7th September 1916 at Derby giving his age as 25 yrs and 101 days, his address was 11 Ratcliff Row, Coalpit Lane, Nottingham, he stated he had served with the Royal Navy for 6 yrs. having been discharged in August 1916.

He was posted to the Royal Garrison Artillery, 156th Heavy Bty. Landing in France on 2nd March 1917 he died of wounds on 13th April 1918,at the stationary hospital Doullens, he is buried Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No 1 (grave ref VI.B.30)

Nottingham Evening Post In Memoriam 14/4/1919:

'Cumberpatch. In loving memory of Bmdr W T Cumberpatch RGA killed in action April 13th 1918. An unknown grave tis a bitter blow. One of the best. Sorrowing mother, sisters, brother (with colours).'
