William Edward Jack was born in 1898 at Nottingham, he was the eldest son of William an iron driller and Edith Jack née Swift of 22, Manning St., Nottingham.
His father William was born in 1868 at Nottingham, his mother Edith Mary Swift was born in 1872 at Nottingham, they wer married on 22nd May 1893 at Emmanuel Church, Nottingham, they had 6 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 22 Mannign Street, Nottingham, William 43 yrs is an iron driller, he isliving with his wife Edith Mary 39 yrs and their children, Lilian 17 yrs an over locker, Edith Gladys 15 yrs a lace assistant, William Edward 12 yrs a scholar, Gertrude 10 yrs, Claude 7 yrs and Eric 2 years of age,
Private William Edward Jack enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 13th battalion Royal Scots he had been reported missing in August 1917; his parents were notified in July 1918 that he had been presumed killed on 22nd August 1917, he is buried in Potijze Chateau Grounds Cemetery (grave ref ll.E.9)
Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 22 July 1918: 'JACK, missing August 22nd 1917, now presumed killed, Private William Jack, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Jack.'
