Jack Butler was born on 5th August 1892 at Sheffield, he was baptised along with his sister Ellen on 22nd October 1902 at ST Marys, Nottingham, he was the son of Charles Brierley Butler a waiter and Gertrude Butler née Harmston of 118 Goldsmith Street Nottingham
His father Charles Brierley Butler was born 1872 at Ruskington, Linconshire, his mother Gertrude Harrison was born in 1864 at Cranwick , Lincolnshire, they were married on 18th January 1892 at St Andrews Church, Nottingham,they a had a further child, Ethel born 1895 at Nottingham.
In the 1911 census the family were living at 3 Harlaxton Street, Nottingham,Charles Brierley Butler 39 yrs is a waiter, he is living with his wife Gertrude 41 yrs and their daughter Ethel 16 yrs a pinafore tucker.
He was the husband of Maud Alexandra Karrup (born 1st September 1892) whom he married in 1911 at Nottingham, they lived at 53 Coppice Road (later Ransom Road) they had 3 children,Irene Winifred born 27th June 1911, Muriel Doris born 19th January 1913 and Charles John born 28th September 1915.
In 1911 they lived at 9 Westville Street Nottingham.
Private Jack Butler enlisted at Pontefract, he served with the 1/7th Bn. Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge's Own)
Jack was killed on 16 August 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium (Panel 113 to 115).
Nottingham Southern Cemetery, Wilford Hill: 'In loving memory of Charles Brierley Butler who died Aug 6th 1924, aged 52 years. Also of Jack, only son of the above, killed in action Aug 16th 1917, aged 25 years'. Additional names: Gertrude Butler, wife of Charles, died 8 January 1931, and Ethel Gutteridge (?sister), died 11 March 1964.
Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged), 31 August 1917: ‘Butler. Killed in action, Private Jack Butler, Middlesex, husband of Maud (née Karrup) only son of Mr and Mrs Charles Butler, 118 Goldsmith Street, age 25.’
