Family history

Walter Bradshaw was born in 1890 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late John a house joiner and Clara Blackshaw née Wilson of 20 Lennox Street, Nottingham.

His father John was born in 1852 at Nottingham he died in 1913 aged 60 yrs, his mother Clara Wilson was born 1854 at Nottingham, they were married on 27th August 1872 at St Matthias Church, Sneinton they went to have 8 children.

In the 1911 cenus his parents were living at 20 Lennox Street, Nottingham, John 59 yrs a house joiner is living with his wife Clara 59 yrs and their daughter Ada 16 yrs a lace hand.

He was the husband of Annie Elizabeth Walker (born 11th March 1889 ) whom he married on 8th October 1909 at Nottinghamhe he was father of Lily born 5th February 1910 John born 29th July 1911 Mary Ann born 30th Janauary 1913 and Walter Blackshaw born 29th March 1916.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 22 Lennox Street Nottingham, Walter Blackshaw 21 yrs is a furniture dealer, he is living with his wife Annie 21 yrs and their daughter Lily 1 year of age.

Commencing 10th June 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 33 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military history

Walter Blackshaw enlisted at Chilwell, Nottingham, he served with the 1/8th battalion SherwoodForesters Regiment, and had served in France since 11th November 1914. was killed in action, 23rd November 1917, whilst serving in the trenches near St. Elie with the 1/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Obituaries published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 22nd November 1919:-

BLACKSHAW. - In loving memory of my dear husband, who fell in action November 23rd, 1917. Christ will link the broken chain closer when we meet again. - From wife and family.

“BLACKSHAW. - In memory of W. Blackshaw, killed Nov. 23rd, 1917. His memory is as dear to-day as in the hour he passed away. - Mother, Ada, and Tom.”
