Family history

Harry Barrowcliff was born in 1881 the son of George a sinker maker and Ann Barrowcliff née Cartledge .

His parents lived at 43 Corporation Road, Nottingham. His father was born in 1852 at Normanton on Soar and his mother in 1854 at Woodborough. They were married on 19th September 1871 at St Switherns Church, Woodborough Harry had four siblings – Herbert b.1872 Nottingham, James Cartledge b.1879, Kate b.1883 Nottingham and Frederick b.1888 Woodborough.

Harry was the husband of Susan Frith Hewitt (born 9th December 1880) whom he married on 8th June 1907 at St Ann's they had 4 children, Harry born 09/03/1908, Arthur Edwin born 11th July 1909, Alicer Mary born 23rd June 1911 and Leslie Charles born 16th October 1913. they lived at 6 Lavender Street, Dame Agnes Street, Nottingham.

In the 1911 census the family at 1 Ludlow Terrace, Dame Agnes Street Nottingham Harry 30 yrs is a painters labourer, he is living with his wife Susan 30 yrs and their children Harry 3 years and Arthur 1 year old.

Commencing 28th April 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 33 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military history

Private Harry Barrowcliff enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1/6th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. he was killed in action on 29th September 1918 in the attack near Lihaucourt, France.His name is commemorated : Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France. Panel 7.Vis-En-Artois Memorial (Panel 7)
