Family history

Thomas Burke (junior) was born in 1889 at Leigh in Lancashire, he was the son of the late Thomas Burke (senior) and Ellen Burke née Cruise of Hucknall.

His father Thomas Burke was born in 1862 at Manchester, his mother Ellen Cruise was born in 1862 in Ireland, they were married in 1884 at Wigan, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 6 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census Thomas Burke (junior) had enlisted into the Army and was with his battalion in Barracks in India.

In the same 1911 census his parents and sblings were living at 12 Kerfoot Row, Castle Hill, Hindley, Thomas 49 yrs is colliery surface hand, he is living with his wife Ellen 49 yrs and their children, Elizabeth 20 yrs no occupation, Mark 15 yrs a mine labourer, Margaret 12 yrs, Robert 11 yrs and Babara 3 yrs of age.

Military history

Private Thomas Burke enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and served in India. He went to France on 10th September 1914 and was killed in action on 20th October 1914, when the battalion held position south-east of Bois Grenier, Ennetieres/Escobecques, France against a German attack. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the : Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium. Panel 7.
