He was the son of John Barber born 1857 at Nottingham and Sarah Payne born 1857 at Nottingham they were married on 14th May 1882 at St Ann's Nottingham they had 5 children.

In the 1911 census William Barber 16 yrs a shop assistant is living at 32 Jackson Street, St Ann's Well Road, Nottingham, he isliving with his married sister Louisa Henley 26 yrs and her huband John James Henley 26 yrs a general labourer and their son John Henry Henley 2 yrs of age, also living at the address is his sister Ann Barber 19 yrs a lace jennier.

His pension record card shows his next of kin as his married siter Louisa Henley.

Military history

Sergeant William Barber enlisted at Matlock, he served with the 16th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, He was killed in action, 3rd August 1917, aged 23, whilst in the line near St. Julian, Belgium he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
