Family history

William Edward Gough was born on 11th November 1874 at Marsh Buckingham, he was the son of William Gough an agricultural labourer and Ellen Gough née Parker of Marsh Gibbon Buckinghamshire.

His father William was born in 1836 at Marsh Gibbon, his mother Ellen Parker was born in 1842 at Bicester, Oxfordshire, they were married on 31th October 1864 at Marsh Gibbon, they went on to have 8 children.

He was the husband of Elizabeth (Eliza) Langham (born 18th November 1880 at Bradmore, Nottinghamshire ) they were married on 12th June 1905 at Brinsley, Nottinghamshire, they had children, Lilian Elizabeth, born 25th April 1906 Gladys May born 25th June 1908 and William Edward Gough born 1st February 1914.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 37 Ladysmith Road , Sneinton Nottingham, William Edward 36 yrs is a fruit carterhe is living with his wife Eliza 30 yrs and their children, Lillian Elizabeth 4 yrs and Gladys May 2 year of age, also living with him is his brother Albert Gough 32 yrs a fruit carter.

The family later lived at 29 Kingsley Road, Sneinton Nottingham.

Military history

Sapper William Edward Gough enlisted 7/4/1915 at Bristol standing 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing 13 Stone. He embarked 27/9/1916 at Southampton aboard SS Victoria and was posted 30/9/1916 to No 2 Base Remounts Depot. He was compulsorily transferred 1/3/1917 to the Royal Engineers as platelayer very superior, with rank of Sapper to 109th Railway Company (New No. WR 276306).He went on leave between 27/10/1917 to 6/11/1917. He was admitted to Hospital 21/5/1918 to 10/6/1918 returning to his unit 31/7/1918.On 25/8/1 (Label No.38287.) He was posted 25/8/1818 From109th to R.C.T.D. Royal Engineers Longmoor (R.E. Railways Depot) before demobilisation. He received a disability pension for anaemia 22/5/1919.

He died on 3rd September 1920 and is buried at Nottingham General Cemetery Grave Reference: 16944 B
