Family history

Fred Woolley was born in 1893 at Nottingham, he was the son of John William a drapers porter and Emma Woolley née Breatt was a hosiery hand and the brother of Clarence Woolley.

His father John William was born in 1861 at Nottingham, his mother Emma Breatt was born in 1861 at Nottingham they were married on 13th April 1879 at St Ann's, Nottingham, they went on to have 5 children, sadly 2 died in infancy or early childhood.

In 1901 they lived at 8 Stone Street (St Matthias) Notingham

In the 1911 census the family lived at 2 Seymour Terrace, Seymour Street, Carlton Road Sneinton Nottingham John 50 yrs is a drapers porter, he is living with his wife Emma 50 yrs a hosiery hand and their children, Fred 18 yrs a hosiery hand and Clarence 14 yrs a hosiery hand.

Military history

Private Fred Woollley enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment he was reported missing after the first day of the Battle of the Somme 1st July 1916 during the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 16 June 1917: 'Woolley. Missing July 1st now reported killed, Private Fred Woolley, Sherwood Foresters, age 24, son of Mr and Mrs Woolley, 2 Seymour Terrace. Mother, father, brother Clarence and Arthur (in Canada).'
