Bertie Woolley was born in 1894 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late Frederick a printer and Mary Woolley née childs of 72 Westwood Road, Sneinton Dale, Nottingham.
His father Frederick Woolley was born in 1872 at Nottingham he died prior to 1911, his mother Mary Childs was born in 1873 at Oxton, Nottinghamshire, they were married on 7th October 1893 at St Stephens Church, Sneinton, Nottingham they had 3 children.
In the 1911 census his widow mother Mary 38 yrs living at 72 Westwood Road, Sneinton, she is living with her children Bertie 17 yrs a hosiery hand, Annie 16 yrs a blouse machinist and Cecil 4 months old.
Berte was the husband of Violet Dyson (born 13th August 1893) they were married on 21st April 1913 at the Nottingham registry office, they lived at 20 Wycliffe Grove, Mapperley, Nottingham he and Violet had one child Bertie born 3rd August 1913.
Commencing 15th January 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.
Private Bertie Woolley enlisted on 14th December 1914 at Nottingham, giving his address as 28 Beckingham Road, Radford, Nottingham, his age was 21 yrs and 1 month, he was a hosiery factory hand. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, however he was transferred on 28th April 1915 to the West Riding Regiment, he landed in France on 4th May 1915. he was killed on 1st July 1916 the first day of the battle of the Somme, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 17 July 1916: 'Woolley, killed in action July 1st, Private Bert Woolley, West Riding Regiment, age 22. Wife and child.'
