Family history

Mark Wood was born in 1890 at Snaith, Yorkshire, he was the son of William a bricklayer and Hannah Wood née Beevers of Market Place, Snaith, Yorks

His father William was born in 1854 at Rawcliffe, Yorkshire, his mother Hannah Beevers was born in 1859 at Skyhouse, Yorkshire they were married on 2nd August 1880 at Snaith, they went on to have 11 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhhod.

In the 1911 census the family were living at Market Place, Snaith, William 57 yrs a bricklayer is living with his wife Hannah 51 yrs and their children, Fred 25 yrs a journeyman joiner, Richard 17 yrs a railway parcel porter, Ernest 15 yrs an apprentice joiner, Susannah 13 yrs a scholar and Edwin 9 yrs a scholar.

In the same 1911 census we find that Mark has left the family home he is living at Pinxton, Derbyshire.

By the time of his attestation in 1915 he was living at 39 Sedgley Ave, Sneinton, Nottingham

Military history

Private Mark Wood enlisted on 25th November 1915 at Nottingham, giving hs address as 39 Sedgley Ave, Sneinton, Nottingham, he was 26 yrs and 1 month old, he was a parcel porter, his next of kin was his father William Wood of the same address (later amended to Snaith, Yorkshire) he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilsed for war on 23rd February 1916 at Derby, and posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment.(service number 36562 ) and landed in France on 13th November 1916 he was transferred on 2nd December 1916 to the 8th battalion North Staffordshire Regimen and was killed in action on 20th September 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot, Memorial.

Two of his brothers were also killed during the 'Great War'

Private 35127 Ernest Wood 4th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers died on 27th May 1918

Private 20417 Richard Wood 13th battalion Royal Scots died 15th Septmber 1916.

neither of his brothers are on the Nottinghamshire Roll of Nottingham, as their is no direct connection with Nottinghamshire.
