James Aaron Wheat was born in 1896 in Nottingham and was the son of Charles a fuit hawker and later a night watchman and Lucy Wheat née Stanley and the brother of Charles Henry and William Frederick Wheat (killed in action 7/12/1916) and the half brother of Albert, Lucy, Hilda and Margaret Sulley Wheat. In 1911 they lived at 53 Oldham Street Carlton Road Nottingham.
His father Charles was born in 1876 at Nottingham, he died in 1943, his mother Lucy Stanley was born in 1875 at Nottingham, she died in 1945,they were married in 1893 at Nottingham they had 3 children, however his mother later lived with a Frederick Sulley born 1867 at Arnold, with whom she had 9 further children commencing with Albert Sulley Wheat born 1910.
In the 1901 census his mother is living with Frederick Sulley 35 yrs a coal hewer at 37 Victoria Street, Nottingham, she is shown as Lucy Sulley 25 yrs and is living with her children, Charles Wheat 7 yrs Aaron Wheat 5 yrs, Frederick Wheat 3 yrs of age and Albert Sulley 1 year of age.
By the 1911 census the family are living at 53 Oldham Street, Nottingham, Frederick Sulley 43 yrs is single and general labourerer, he is living with Lucy Wheat 37 yrs married and head of the household, and her children, Charles Wheat 17 yrs an out of work printer, James Aaron Wheat 15 yrs a bobbin spinner, William Frederick Wheat 13 yrs a bobbin spinner, Albert Sulley Wheat 10 yrs a scholar, Lucy Sulley Wheat 7 yrs a scholar, William Sulley Wheat 5 yrs Hilda Sulley Wheat 3 yrs and Sarah Sulley Wheat 1 year old.
In the same 1911 census his father Charles Wheat is boarding at 2 Radcliffe Row, Coalpit Lane, Nottingham he is 34 yrs and states he is a 'widow' and a fruit hawker, he is lodging with a widow Jane Mather 34 yrs a lace clipper and her 5 children.
Private James Aaron Wheat, enlisted in Chesterfield and served with the 1/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, he was killed in action on 14th May 1917. He is buried in Maroc British Cemetery, Grenay.
His brother Pte. William Frederick Wheat, 26th Battalion Middlesex Regiment, was killed in action on 7th December 1916. Aged 19, he is buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece.
