Family history

George Westby was born in 1894 at Sneinton, Nottingham, he was the son of William a rope maker and Catherine Westby née May and the brother of Ellen, William, James and Harry Westby of 11 Crown Street Blue Bell Hill St Ann's, Nottingham.

His father William was born in 1857 at Nottingham, his mother Catherine May was born in 1857 at Nottingham she died in 1911 aged 54 yrs, they were married on 20th May 1877 at St Stephens Church, Sneinton, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 14 South Street Sneinton, William 54 yrs is a widow and is out of work, he is living with his children, Ellen 27 yrs an overlocker, William 25 yrs a labourer, James 24 a palin net lace maker, George 17 yrs a jacker off and Henry 10 years of age,

Military history

Private George Westby enlisted at Nottingham, he served wit the 8th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light infantry, he was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the Battle of the Somme, he is buried at Martinsart British Cemetery
