Family history

Herbert Thrower was born in 1887 at Handworth, Yorkshire , he was the son of James H Thrower a driver and Ellen Thrower née Moore of 72 Lord Nelson Street Sneinton Nottingham.

His father James was born in 1864 at Fleet, Lincolnshire, his mother Ellen Morre was born in 1861 at Kincote Leicestershire, they were married in 1886 at Leicester, they had 5 children,1 of which died in infancy or early childhood their surviving children were Catherine born 1886, Herbert born 1887, Ellen born 1891 and Walter born 1896.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 72 Lord Nelson Street, Sneinton, Nottingham, Ellen 49 yrs is a widow and a charwoman, she is living with her children Ellen, 20 yrs a lace finisher and Walter 16 yrs a railway messenger. Ellen stated she had been married for 26 yrs and had 5 children, sadly 1 had died in infancy or early childhood.

Herberts army service record contain a form W5080 upon which his next of kins lists Herberts surviving relatives, this was completed by his mother Ellen on 24th May 1919, who states regarding her husband, James that he had desreted the home and family 20 years a go.

His probate was proven on 4th February 1919 at Nottingham, it shows him as Herbert Thrower, 72 Lord Nelson Street, Sneinton, Nottingham, gunner in H.M. Army died 27th May 1918 in France, his effects of 298 pounds 9 shillings and two pence were left to his brother Walter Thrower private in H.M Army.

Military history

Gunner Herbert Thrower enlisted at Lutterworth, on 6th December 1915, giving his address as Covert Farm, Gilmorton, Lutterworth he was 28 yrs and 270 days old, he was a cowman and shepherd, his next of kin was his mother Ellen Thrower of 72 Lord Nelson Street, Sneinton, Nottingham., he was posted to the reserves. Mobilised for war on 14th August 1916 at Great Yarmouth, he was posted as a gunner into the Royal Garrisn Artillery. at No 4 Depot, Royal Garrison Artillery. He landed in France on 24th February 1917 and on 14th March 1917 was posted to the 1st Siege Battery. He was killed in action on 27th May 1918, havig no known grave his name is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial, France.
