John Thompson was born on 29th September 1887 at Nottingham, he was baptised on 6th February 1888 at St Ann's parish church Nottingham, he was the son of the late George a cabinet maker and Elizabeth Thompson née Cope
His father George was born in 1847 at Shottie, Derbyshire,he died in 1907 aged 47 yrs his mother Elizabeth Cope was born in 1851 at Nottingham, they were married in 1870 at Nottingham they had 11 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. ,
In the 1911 census his widowed mother Elizabeth 60 yrs is living at 11 Brighton Street, Nottingham, with her children, Harriett 26 yrs a pattern girl, Alfred 20 yrs a farrier, Frank 18 yrs a grocers assistant, and her married daughter Emma Grant 36 yrs and her granddaughter Edna 6 yrs of age.
He was the husband of Lottie Elizabeth Sheffield (born 2nd August 1888 ) whom he married on 18th January 1908 at St Bartholomews Church, Nottingham, and the father of John Eric born 10th May 1908 and George Thompson born 28th July 1912, of 25 Cooper Street, Nottingham.
In 1911 they lived with Lottie's family at 8 Lord Street Windmill Lane Sneinton Nottingham. Lottie later lived at 25 Cooper Street Alfred Street St Ann's Nottingham.
Commencing 6th May 1918 his widow was awardd a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week.
Private John Thompson enlisted at Nottingham, he served initially with the service number 204064 in the Royal Engineers, he was serving with the 19th battalion Lancashire Fusiliers when he was killed in action he is buried at New Irish Farm Cemetery
