Robert Britton was born in 1897 at Hucknall he was the son of Samuel a coal miner fitter and Hannah Britton née Carline and the brother of Gertrude Annie, Sarah Hannah, Mary Jane, Alice May and Leonard Britton. of Hucknall.
His father Samuel was born in 1858 at Fiskerton, his mother Hannah Carline was born in 1861 at Princes End, Staffordshire, they were married on 25th March 1883,they went on to have 18 children, sadly 6 were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 51 Hankin Street Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire.Samuel 53 yrs is a coal miner fitter, he is living with hos wofe Hannah 50 yrs and their children, Gertrude 17 yrs a cigar maker, Robert 14 yrs a scholar, Sarah 12 yrs, Mary Jane 10 yrs, Alice 6 yrs and Leonard 4 years of age.
Samuel and Hannah later moved to 77 Hankin Street.
Private Robert Britton, enlisted in Hucknall he served with the 2nd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He landed in France on 29th July 1915 . He was killed in the sinking of H.M.T. Cestrian when it was torpedoed 150 miles east of Malta on 15th April 1917.
His name is commemorated on the Chatby Memorial
