John William Smith was born in 1898 at Nottingham, he was baptised on 30th September 1903 at St Matthias Church, Sneinton (along with his sister Ethel) he was the son of Alexander a general carter and Alice Mary Smith néé Russell and the brother of Ethel Smith of 6 Lowdham Street St Ann's Nottingham.
His father Alexander was born in 1875 at Nottingham, his mother Alice Mary Russell was born in 1877 at Great Malvern, Worcestershire, they were married in 1897 at Nottingham, they had 3 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 1 Royal Oak Hill Carlton Road Alexandr 35 yrs is a general carter, he is living with his wife Alice Mary 33 yrs and their children John William 13 yrs a scholar and Ethel 12 yrs of age.
Private John William Smith enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served wit the service number 305605 in the Sherwood Foresers Regiment, he later served with the 16th battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 3rd May 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
