Edward Francis Smith was born in 1894 at Nottingham, he was the only survivng son of Edward a warehouseman and Alice Smith née Guy of 2 Eastham Cottages Hawksworth Street Carlton Road Nottingham.

His father Edward was born in 1872 at Nottingham, his mother Alice Guy was born in 1874 at Nottingham, they were married on 16th October 1897 at St Ann's, Nottingham, they went on to have 5 chidren, sady 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 Eastham Cottage, Hwksworth Street, Carlton Road, Nottingham, Edward 39 yrs is a warehouseman, he is living with his wife Alice 37 yrs and their son Edward 17 yrs a printer.

Military history

Private Edward Francis Smith enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 3rd Bn London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers) he was killed in action between 24th/28th August 1918, he is buried at Bronfay Farm Military Cemetery Bray-Sur-Somme
