Family history

Charles Henry Shewring was born in 1888 at Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan he was the son of Phillip a railway platelayer and Jane Shewring née Chandler and the brother of Florence and Edith Jane Shewring of 7 Denstone Road, Carlton Road, Nottingham.

His fathe Phillip was born 1856 at Sherton, Wiltshire, he died in 1900 aged 44 yrs, his mother Jane Chandler was born in 1863 at Ludershall, Wiltshire, they were married on 4th September 1882 they went on to have 9 children, sadly 4 were to die infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 15 Cardiff Street Sneinton Jane 48 yrs is a widow she is ling with her children, Florence 24 yrs a lace jennier, CHarles Henry 23 yrs a tailors assistant and Edith Jane a blouse cutter.

Military history

Gunner Charles Henry Shewing enlisted on 18th January 1915 at Nottingham, he was posted to the Army Service Corps, he embarked from Southampton on 6th November 1915 landing at Le Harve the following day. On 30th October 1916 he was invalided to England,. He went out agin to France on 22nd April 1917 and posted to the Royal Garrison Artillery and on 10th May 1917 was posted to the 175th battery Royal Garrison Artillery.

He returned to England on leave on 3rd Jamuary 1919 and he was demoblised whilst on leave.

He died on 20th February 1919 of disease and is buried at the Nottingham General Cemetery
