William Arthur Shepherd was born in 1890 at Dudley Hill, Bradford, he was the son of David a railway signalman and Fanny Shepherd nee Bailey of 22 Kentwood Road, Sneinton, Nottingham.
His father David was born in 1866 at Stevenage, Hertfordshire, his mother Fanny Bailey was born in 1868 at Wltham on the Wolds, Leicestershire, they were married in 1888 their marriage was recorded in the Melton Mowbray registration district, they went on to have 5 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 62 Lyndhurst Road, Sneinton, David 45 yrs is a railway signalman, he is living with his wife Fanny 43 yrs and their children, Alice Bertha 19 yrs a blouse machinist and Joseh Edward 13 yrs a scholar.
In the same 1911 census we find that William Arhtur has joined the Army , he is serving in India with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters he is 21 yrs of age.
Lance Corporal William Arthur Shepherd enlisted on 20th November 1908 at Derby, giving his age as 18 years and 8 months, he was a printer, he was posted to the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was in India between 1910 and and 1914 and returned to England before landing in France in 4th November 1914. He was wounded a gun shot wound to his foot on 22nd November 1914 and was returned to England on the 'Carisbrook Caslte for treatment. On 19th May 1915 he returned to France and was promoted to Lance Corporal on 25th February 1916, he was killed in actio on 13th November 1916, he is buried at Guards Cemetery, Lesboeufs, France
