Samuel Scothern was born in 1876 at Bingham, Nottinghamshire, baptised on 13th August 1876 at St Marys Church, Bingham, he was the son of the late Joseph a farm labourer and Harriet Scothern née Gill of 37 Virginia Street Nottingham.
His father Joseph was born in 1843 at Bingham, he died in 1914 aged 71 yrs, his mother Harriett Gill was born in 1841 at Sheffield, they were married in 1866 at Sheffield, they had 7 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census his parents and a sibling are living at Grantham Road, Bingham, Joseph 68 yrs is a farm labourer he is living with his wife Harriett 70 yrs and their son John Charles Scothern 26 yrs a decorator.
In the same 1911 census we find that Samuel has left the family home he is living at 85 Church Road, Stockingford, Nuneaton, he is 35 yrs of age single and is a butcher, he has a lodger living with him
Private Samuel Scothern enlisted at Nottingham on 12th May 1916 giving his place of birth as Bingham, he was 40 yrs and 62 days old, he was a blacksmith stricker. his next o kin was his mother Harriett of Bingham He landed in France on 5th October 1916 embarking from Folkstone and landing in Boulogne, on the same date he was posted in the field to the 14th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He was transferred on 18th October 1916 to the Durham Light Infantry. He was killed in action whilst serving with the 1/6th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment on 12th May 1917, he is buried at Fosse No.10 Communal Cemetery Extension, Sains-En-Gohelle
