William Royston was born in 1872 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late Joseph a frame worker knitter and Emma Royston, née Bowley of Nottingham.
His father Joseph was born in 1839 at Nottingham his mother Emma Bowley was born in 1841 at Loughton, Leicestershire, she died in 1907 aged 66 yrs, they wee married on 11th December 1859 at St Ann's parish church, Nottingham, they went on to have 5 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 161 Windmill Lane, Sneinton, Joseph 72 yrs is a frame work knitter he is living with his daughter Ada 37 yrs a pattern girl and his granddaughter Elsie Binch 20 yrs a pattern girl.
In the 1911 census William was lodging with his married sister and brother in law at 31 Keswick Street Sneinton Nottingham. William is 38 yrs and is a maltster.
Private William Royston enlisted on 5th September 1914 at Derby, he was a reservist having served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment for 8 yrs he was discharged time expired in 1899, he was 42 years and 161 days old, he was a foundry labourer, he was posted to the Sherwood Foresters and later transferred to (579910) 223rd Coy Labour Corps. He was discharged on 4th February 1919 being no longer fit for war service. his discharge address was 32 St Matthias Road, Carlton Road, Nottingham.
He died on 7th January 1920 at the Nottingham General Hospital and is buried at Nottingham General Cemetery
