Family history

John Robert Priestley was born in 1898 at Nottingham, he was the son of John Thomas a railway carman and Ada Mary Priestley née Elliott and the brother of Henrietta Maria Priestley of 6 St Christopher Street Colwick Road Sneinton Nottingham.

His father John Thomas was born in 1874 at Manthrope, Lincolnshire, his mother Ada Mary Elliott was born in 1871 at Keyworth, they were married in 1897 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham registration district, they had 2 children.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 30 Kimberley Street Colwick Road, Sneinton, John Thomas 37 yrs is a railway carman, he is living with his wife Ada Mary 40 yrs and their children, John Robert 12 yrs a scholar and Henrietta Maria 7 years of age.

Military history

Private John Robert Priestley enlisted at Notingham, he served with the 2nd battalion West Riding Regiment, he was killed in action on 16th August 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial
