Family history

Ernest Moakes was born in 1898 at Nottingham, he was baptised on 11th February 1898 at St Albans Church, Sneinton, Nottingham, he was the son of James a presser and shreader at a hosiery warehouse, and Louisa Moakes née Barnes of 30 Royal Oak Hill, Carlton Road, Nottingham. and the brother of James, Percy, Frederick, Alfred, Florence and Ivy Moakes.

His father James Moakes was born in 1869 at Nottingham his mother Louisa Barnes was born in 1871 at Nottingham, they were married on 18th November 1893 at St Matthias Church, Sneinton, they went on to have 11 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 25 Rock Terrace Lower Eldon Street Sneinton, Nottingham, James 42 yrs a presser and shreader is living with his wife Louisa 40 yrs a laundress and their 7 children including Ernest 16 yrs a works cropper in a printing works.

Military history

Lance Corporal Ernest Moakes enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 9th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he landed in France on 11th September 1915, he died of wounds on 26th April 1918, he is buried at Wytschaete Military Cemetery, Belgium
