Family history

Robert Millward was born in 1882 at Wisbech, Lincolnshire, he was the son of John William Millard a carter and Annie Millward née Peers of 28 West Street, Nottingham.

His father John William was born in 1851 at Nottingham, his mother Annie Peers was born in 1856 at Bedford, they were married on 29th January 1882 at St Lukes Church, Carlton Road, Nottingham they went on to have 7 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his parents were living at 28 West Street, Nottingham John William 60 yrs is out of work carter, he is living with his wife Annie 55 yrs and their son Ernest 18 yrs.

Robert was married to Annie Smallwood (born 10th October 1885) they were married on 10th June 1906 at St Albans Church, Sneinton, Nottingham they lived at 21 Pomfret Street, Sneinton.Nottingham, Annie brought a child to the marriage Annie May Smallwood born 18th April 1904 they had 3 further children, Louise born 6th March 1909, Nellie born 27th November 1911 and Elizabeth born 7th July 1914.

In the 1911 census the family were living at at Promfret Street, Nottingham, Robert 29 yrs is a lace dipper, he is living with his wife Annie 26 yrs a lace dresser and their children, Annie Smallwood Millward 7 yrs and Louise 2 yrs of age.

Commencing 22nd November 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military history

Private Robert Millward enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment he was killed in action during the attack on Rouge De Bout, France, 9th May 1915 during the Second Battle of Artois.

He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial Panel 7
