Benjamin Bates was born in 1879 in Bolsover
He married his wife Mary Ellen Clayton in 1902 , their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they lived at 44 Peverill Street Hucknall and later 62 George Street, Hucknall, they had a daughter prior to getting married , Beatrice Bates Clayton born 26th July 1902.
His widow was awarded a pension of 17 shilings and 6 pence a week which commenced on 12th December 1916.
Military history
Private Benjamin Bates, enlisted at Hucknall and served with the 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 15th June 1916 whilst out on a working party near the canal bank, at St. Jean, near Ypres. He is buried in La Brique Military Cemetery No. 2.
