William Kirk was born in in 1880 at Nottingham, he was the son of Peter Thomas Kirk a waggoner and later a bath attendent and Ellen Kirk née Green of 12 Seymour Street, Nottingham,
His father Peter Thomas was born in 1850 at Nottingham, his mother Ellen Green was born in 1852 at Smalley, Derbyshire, they were married on 11th January 1875 at St Marks Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 13 children, sadly 7 were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 13 Fairholme Terrace, Nottingham, Peter 61 yrs is a baths attendent he is living with hos wife Ellen 59 yrs a lace clipper and their children, Mary Ann 25 yrs a hosiery machinist, Hannah 20 yrs a lace clipper, also living with them is Ellen Kirk 12 yrs a scholar their granddaughter.
William married Annie Foster in 1900 at Nottingham, they had 4 children, Hilda born 1902, Ada born 1903, Frank William born 1906 and Annie born 1910,
In the 1911 census the family were living at 11 Fairholme Terrace, Carlton Road, Nottingham, William 31 yrs is a bras winder in the lace trade, he is living with his wife Annie 31 yrs and their children, Hilda 9 years Ada 8 yrs, Frank Willam 4 yrs and Annie 1 year old.
Commencing 10th April 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 27 shillings and 2 pence a week.
His widow remarried Samuel Kirk on 31st August 1918 they lived at 170 Gordon Road, Nottingham.
Rifleman William Kirk enlisted at Nottingham on 8th September 1914, giving his age as 34 yrs and 182 days, he was a lace winder, he was posted to the 10th battalion Rifle Brigade. He landed in France on 22nd July 1915 and was killed in action on 26th September 1915.,he is buried atRue-Du-Bacquerot (13th London) Graveyard, Laventie.
