Family history

John James was born on 22nd December 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of Alfred a porter at a carboard box works, and Annie James née Straw and the brother of Ada and Annie James of 43 Hogarth Street, Carlton Road, Nottingham,

His father was born in 1869 at Ruddington, Nottingham, his mother Annie Straw was born in 1870 at Nottingham, they were married in 1890 at Nottingham, they had further children, Ada born 1891 and Annie born 1906.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 40 Hooton Street, Carlton Road, Nottingham, Alfred 41 yrs is a porter at a cardboard box works, he is living with his wife Annie 41 yrs, and their childrem, Ada 20 yrs a cigar maker, John James an errand boy in cardboard box works and Annie 5 yrs of age.

Military history

Private John James enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action, 17th July 1916, aged 20, whilst in the line South-East of Trones Wood, West of Maltz Horn Farm, France, being heavily bombarded by tear gas and gas shells during the Battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
