Family history

Walter Hinks was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of Walter a porter and Ellen Hinks née Slack, of Kentwood Road, Colwick Road, Nottingham. and the brother of Harold (killed in action 9th October 1918 ), Ernest, Harold, Fanny and Albert Hinks.

His father Walter was born in 1866 at Radford, his mother Ellen Slack was born in 1870 at Nottingham they were married on 12th March 1892 at St Stephens Church, Sneinton, they went on to have 6 children,

In the 1911 census the family lived at 20 Kentwood Road Colwick Road Nottingham, Walter 45 yrs is a porter, he is living with hos wofe Ellen 41 yrs and their children, George Henry 19 yrs a messenger, Walter 16 yrs a van guard, Ernest a railway dray boy, Harold 11 yrs a schoar, Fanny 5 yrs and Albert 2 yrs of age.

He married Lilian Sayers (born 29th October 1894) on 16 August 1917 at St Stephen Parish Church, Nottingham they lived at 344 Radford Road, Nottingham, Walter was sent to Passchendaele a few days later where he died - they had been married for just over a month.

Commencing 15th April 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military history

Private Walter Hinks enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 11545 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment (Notts & Derby Regiment) he was serving with the 6th Bn Oxfordshire and Buckingham Light Infantry Regiment, he was killed in action on 20th September 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the
Tyne Cot Memorial Panel 96 to 98

Extra information

His brother Private Harold Hinks enlisted on 21st October 1916 at Nottingham, giving his address as 29 Kentwood Road, Nottingham, giving his age as 17 yrs and 165 dyas, he was a call boy on the railway, he was posted to the reserves. Mobilised on 10th November 1917 at Derby he was posted to the training reserve, He was posted on 1st April 1918 to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, landing in France on 9th April 1918, he was killed in action on 9th October 1918, he is buried at Honnechy British Cemetery, France.
