Family history

John Henson was born in 1889 at Sneinton, he was the son of the late Frederick and Maria (Margaret) Henson.

John was married to Mary Elizabeth Hadden on 15th January 1916 at the Nottingham Registry Office, they lived at 45 Commerce Place, Barker Gate, Nottingham and at the time of his death in 1916 their home was at 19 Kingston Street, Sneinton, Nottingham.

His widow was awarded a pension of 10 shillings a week commencing 6th November 1916.

His brother Stephen's name was recorded on St Mary's parish register in 1917; his home address was 2 Lotus Street, St Ann's, but at the time he was a prisoner of war.

Military history

Private John Henson enlisted at Nottingham on 11th January 1906, he was 18 yrs and 7 months old, he was an iron moulder, he was posted to the Northumberland Fusiliers (service number 1978). He served in South Africa and later the East Indies He later served with the 2nd battalion Border Regiment. He served in France from 14 April 1915 and was killed in action on 19th April 1916 and is buried in Citadel New Military Cemetery, Fricourt (grave ref V.F.16). He qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
