John William Booth was born in 1893 at Nottingham, he was the son of John a salt drayman and Annie Booth née Sisson and the brother of Walter, Arthur, William Robert and Annie Louise Booth.
His father John was born in 1870 at Flintham, his mother Annie Sisson was born in 1871 at Nottingham, they were married on 8th February 1893 at St Marys Church, Ilkeston, they had 9 chidren sadly 4 died in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 20 Upper Pierrepoint Street Nottingham, John 41 yrs is a salt drayman he is living with hs wife Annie 40 yrs and their children, John William 19 yrs a railway porter, Walter 12 yrs, Arthur 9 yrs, William Robert 6 yrs and Annie Louise 11 months old.
Lance Corporal John William Booth enlisted at Nottingham he went to France with 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters on 4 November 1914. It is likely that he was a special reservist who attested in April 1912. He was in 'C' Company and at some point 'mentioned in dispatches'
He was killed in action during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle - 10 to 13th March 1915. On 12th the enemy attacked in overwhelming numbers forcing the battalion back to the support trench. With a Victoria Cross winning action by Private Jacob Rivers and counter attacks by the men the enemy attack was thrown back and after two hours of close quarter fighting, the battalion regained the lost ground. It had though been at great cost.
