Family history

Herbert Bailey was born in 1897 at Nottingham, he was the son of Annie Raynor of 20 Worksop Road Nottingham.

His mother Annie was born in 1877 at Nottingham, in the 1901 census she is shown as a widow, 25 yrs living at 4 Belmont Square, Nottingham with her children, Herbert F 3 yrs, and Edith A Bailey 2 yrs of age.

His widowed mother remarried in 1907 to John Raynor at Nottingham.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 68 Seymour Road, Nottingham, John Raynor 43 yrs is a lace maker, he is living with his wife Annie Raynor 34 yrs and their children, Hilda Raynor 3 yrs and Elsie Raynor 1 year old , and Annie children, Thomas Bailey 13 yrs an office boy, Edith Annie 12 yrs a scholar and Harry 10 yrs.

Military history

Private Herbert Bailey, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 23rd (1st Sportsman's) Battalion Royal Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 11th June 1917. He is buried in Orchard Dump Cemetery, Arleux-en-Gohelle.

“BAILEY. – In ever loving remembrance of our dear brother Herbert, who was killed June 11th, 1917. Peace, perfect peace. – From Edie and Harry.

“BAILEY. – In fond remembrance of our dear nephew, Herbert, killed in action June 11th, 1917. Ever in our thoughts. – Mr. & Mrs. Butler.”
