Family history

James Walter Armstrong was born in 1893 at Quorn, Leicestershire, he was the son of James Woodward an engine fitter and Sophia Armstrong née Heard and the brother of Sophia

His father James Woodward Armstrong was born in 185 at Nottingham, his mother Sophia Heard was born in 1858 at Nottingham, they were married in 1889.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 23 South Street Sneinton Nottingham. James Woodward 54 yrs is an engine fitter, he is living with his wife Sophia 53 yrs and their children, Sophia 21 yrs a blouse hand and James 19 yrs a carter.

James Woodward Armstrong later moved to 6 Wellington Place Guildhall Street Newark.

Military history

Private James Walter Armstrong enlisted at Newark, he served with the 10th battalion (Prince of Wales's Own Royal) Hussars, he was killed in action on 13th May 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial
