Joseph was born on 15th October 1874 in Eckington, Derbyshire and was the son of the late James and Sarah Ann Harrison née Allen he was baptised at Eckington on 22nd October 1874.
His father James Harrison was born in 1852 at Golden Hill, Staffordshire, he died in 1911 at the Nottingham workhouse, infirmary Bagthorpe he was 59 years old, his mother Sarah Ann Allen was born in 1856 at Yeaverley, Derbyshire, she died in 1878 at Rotherham, she was 22 yrs old, they were married on 16th October 1877 at the Rotherham registry office, they had 2 other children, Sarah Jnae born 1875 and William born 1878.
Joseph Harrison married Emily Wright born 1873 at Paddington, London, on 4th April 1908 at the Nottigham Registry Office.
In the 1911 census he is living at 3 Tyne Street, New Lenton , he is shown as being 36 yrs born Eckington and a coal miner, he is living with his wife Emily Harrison 41 yrs born Paddington and a cotton reeler. On the census they state they have been married for 3 yrs and have had no children.
At the time of his death he was living at 5, Kyte-square, New Lenton,
Pte. Joseph Harrison, 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards, enlisted at Doncaster and served with the 3rd battalion Grenadier Guards , he was killed in action on 18th October 1915. A photograph of the Sudan and Boer War veteran was published on 14th December 1915 (see below) his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial Dud Corner Panel 5 to 7

“HARRISON. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Lance-Cpl. Joe Harrison, Grenadier Guards, 5, Kyte-square, New Lenton, killed in action, 18th October, 1915; went through Boer War, also Egyptian Campaign, four medals and seven clasps. Gone, but not forgotten. – From loving wife.”
