Albert Augustus Atkin was born in 1872 at Nottingham, he was the son of Thomas a cotton warper and the late Mary Ann Atkin née Barrowcliffe of 270 Cotmanhay Road, Ilkeston.
His father Thomas was born in 1838 at Stapleford, his mother Mary Ann Barrowcliffe was born in 1838 at Stapleford, she died in 1879 aged 41 yrs they were married on 28th October 1862 at St Helens Church, Stapleford, they went on to have 8 children.
Albert Augustus Atkin married Ann Violet Piper (born 1876 Hull) on 29th October 1899 at St Georges Church, Nottingham, they lived at 22 Heddersley Street, Union Road, Nottingham.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 12 Hutchinson Street, Nottingham, Albert Augustus Atkin 39 yrs is a labourer he is living with his wife Annie Violet 35 yrs.
In the same 1911 census Albert’s father Thomas is living at 270 Cotmanhay Road, Ilkeston, he is 73 yrs of age and is a cotton warper and a widow, he is living with his married daughter Alice Pilkington and her family.

He served before the war and re-enlisted on 5 September 1914 serving in France from 25 September 1914. He was evacuated to the UK the same year after being taken 'seriously ill' and was admitted to the Scottish General Hospital, Aberdeen. He was medically discharged from the army on 18 January 1915 as no longer fit for military service.
He died on 24 December 1915 and is buried in Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery (grave ref. St. Ann's Valley. 9294).
Nottingham Evening Post, 27 December 1915: 'ATKIN. – On December 24th, at 22, Hedderley-street, Union-road, Albert Augustus Atkin, husband of Annie Violet Atkin. Did his duty for King and country.'
