John Smith was born in 1877 at Sneinton, Nottingham, he was theson of the late Joseph Smith a coal dealer and Julia Smith née Clfton,
His father Joseph Smith was born in 1852 at Nottingham, he died in 1914 at Nottingham, he was 62 yrs of age, his mother Jane Clifton was born in 1854 at Cyathorpe, Nottinghamshire she died in 1913 she was 59 yrs, they were married on 8th August 1875 at Sneinton, Nottingham, they had 11 children,
In the 1911 census his widowed mother and siblings are living at 22 Meredith Street, Nottingham Julia Smith head of the household, 56 yrs is a widow she is living with her children, Louisa 22 yrs a lace friller, Emma 20 yrs a lace jennier, Annie 17 yrs a lace jennier, Gertrude Maud 14 yrs a lace bobbin stripper, and Charles Henry 19 yrs a labourer,
John married Emma Walton (born 11th April 1883) in 1905 at Nottingham, they lived at 155 Norton Street Radford Nottingham.
Private John Smith served with the Northumberland Fusiliers he had previously served in the Sudan and South African campaigns. He died of pneumonia on 7th May 1921 and is buried at Nottingham (New Basford) Cemetery
