Albert Redgate was born in 1883 at Radford, he was the son of the late Thomas a lace maker and Mary Ann Redgate née Plowman.
His father Thomas was born in1860 at Lenton, he died in 1898 at Nottingham, he was 38 yrs old, his mother Mary Ann Plowman was born in 1859 at Radford, she died in 1922 she was aged 63 yrs, they were married in 1879 at Radford, they had 7 children.
In the 1911 census his widowed mother is living at 30 Cambridge Street, Nottingham, his widowed mother Mary Ann Redgate 50 yrs is a plain net mender, she is living with her widowed brother Alfred William Regate 46 yrs working in the cyle trade, and his children,Mary Ann 14 yrs, Thomas 12 yrs and Alfred 10 yrs of age.
He married Margaret Whittaker in 1903 (O/N/D Nottingham) and according to the 1911 Census they had had four children of whom only three survived: Lottie b. 28 June 1904 (J/A/S Nottingham), Ernest Sydney (Sidney) b. 10 December 1908 (1909 J/F/M Nottingham) and Margaret b. 1910 (O/N/D Nottingham) who died in 1911 (J/A/S Nottingham, buried 7 September).
However, it is possible that Albert and Margaret had three more children after 1911 as the birth registration records give the mother's maiden name as Whittaker: Albert b. 18 May 1912 (A/M/J Nottingham), died 1984 (July Basford) aged 72; Lily b. 1913 (O/N/D Nottingham) died 1915 (O/N/D Nottingham, buried 23 October 1915); Lucy b. 1916 (J/A/S Nottingham).
At the time of the 1911 Census the family was living at 62 Court Street, Hyson Green. Albert (28), worked for Raleigh Cycle Company (cycle brazing). He and Margaret (25) had three children; Lottie (7), Ernest (2) and Margaret (7 months). Margaret died the following year aged 1 year.
Albert's wife Margaret later lived at 1 Cross Yard, Bloomsgrove Street, Radford, Nottingham (CWGC). She married Frank Lowe in 1919 (J/A/S Nottingham) and died in 1950 (September Nottingham) aged 64.
Lottie Redgate married George Saxton in 1921 (O/N/D Nottingham). She died in 1972 (December Nottingham) aged 68. Ernest Sidney married Phyllis E Banyard in 1931 (O/N/D Nottingham). He died in 1999 (January Nottingham) aged 90.
Private Albert Redgate initially served with service number 20085 in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby) Regiment. He later transferred to the 161st Protection Company Royal Defence Corps.
He died of bronchitis on 25th February 1917 and was buried in Nottingham General Cemetery.
