Frederick Gilbert Smith was born in 1891 at Basford, Nottingham, he was the 27 year-old son of Arthur Robert a coal porter and Catherine Smith née Hampton of 15 Beaconsfield Terrace, Salisbury Street, Radford, Nottingham,
His father Arthur Robert was born in 1866 at Woolwich, Kent his mother Catherine Louisa Hampton was born in 1869 at Southampton, they were married in 1891 at Nottingham, they had 2 further children, Jack Robert born 1893 and Jem Mitchell born 1899.
In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 15 Beaconsfield Terrace, Salisbury Street, Radford, Arthur Robert 47 yrs is an out of work coal porter, he is living with his wife Cahterine 44 yrs and their sons Jack Robert 17 yrs a worker for John Players and sons, and Jem Mitchell 12 yrs a scholar.
He was the husband of Elizabeth Annie Boseley (born 9th December 1893, ) they were married on 18th July 1915 at St Peters Church, Radford, they lived at 31 St. Paul's Street, Old Radford, Nottingham. His widow was refused a pension on the grounds that they had married after his enlistment.
Sgt. Frederick Gilbert Smith, M.M., [1] enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 1st Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He landed in France on 15th January 1915 and was killed in action on 17th October 1918. He is buried in Pommereuil British Cemetery, France.
[1] The award of the Military Medal was published in the 'London Gazette' on 17th June 1919.
In memoriam published 'Nottingham Evening Post,' 17th October 1919. :-
“SMITH. – In loving memory of our dear son, Sergt. F. G. Smith, 1st K.O.Y.L.I., killed in France October 17th, 1918. Like a Briton he fought, like a Briton he died, his duty he's done, we are quite satisfied. – Loving father, mother, Jem and Jack.”
