He was the son of Catherine Jarvis née Gill (born 1872 ) and the late John Jarvis born 1872 ) they were married on 18th July 1891 at the parish church at Bulwell both were aged 19 yrs and were living at Bulwell John was a miner

His mother remarried to Lewis Newton (born 1873) at Nottingham in 1899 , he was a general labourer,

In the 1911 Census, John is recorded as a 13 year-old shop boy living with his mother and Louis Newton, his step-father and family, at 66 Salisbury Street, Nottingham

Military history

John Jarvis enlisted in Nottingham and joined the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters at Gallipoli on or about the 28th August 1915 as a replacement for the high losses sustained by the battalion. He was killed in action on 13 November 1915 whilst on guard in Ducks Nest (post). The men had been there for 24 hours from 6.30pm on 12th. He was probably buried at the nearby Jephson's Post cemetery and reinterred after the armistice when the Azmak Cemetery was made, grave I. D. 2.
