Family history

Henry was the son of Alfred Edward and Mary Jane Sladen (née Guy).

His father, Alfred Edward, was the son of Alfred Sladen and his first wife, Martha (née Talbot). Alfred and Martha were married at Nottingham St Mary on 4 October 1862; both were 'under-age' and Alfred signed the marriage register with his mark. They had four children: Alfred Edward b. 1863, Agnes Catherine b. 1865 and Walter Joseph b. 1869 who were baptised at Sneinton St Stephen on 9 January 1871, and Martha b. 1871 bap. St Stephen 16 October the same year.

Martha snr. died in March 1877 aged 32 (buried 19 March) and Alfred married Ellen Best (née Smalley) at Nottingham St Mary in September 1877.

Ellen Best was a widow. She had married William Hazeldine Best (b. abt 1847), a tailor, at Leenside St John the Baptist in July 1867. William died in 1874 aged 27 (buried Nottingham St Mary 9 December). There were three children of the marriage, Eliza Ann b. 1869, Ellen (or Helen) b. 1871 and Elizabeth b. 1874, who were all baptised at Nottingham St Peter on 15 August 1875.

Alfred and Ellen had three children: David b. 1878, Oliver birth reg. 1888 (JFM) and Gladys May b. 1893.

Alfred, a lace maker, and Ellen were living at 9 Derwent Street, Nottingham, in 1881 with three of Alfred's four children Agnes, Walter and Martha, Ellen's three daughters and their first child, David. The family had moved to 96 Waterway Street by 1891; only Agnes and Martha Sladen, their step-sisters Ellen and Elizabeth Best, and their half-brothers, David and Oliver Sladen, were in the home on the night of the census. The boys' sister, Gladys, was born two years later. By 1901 Alfred, his wife and two of their three children, Oliver and Gladys, were living at 59 Sneinton Road, Nottingham .

Alfred's son, Alfred Edward, had married Mary Jane (Guy) at Nottingham St Saviour on 14 May 1882, and had two sons, Alfred George b. 1884 (AMJ) and Henry b. 1889 (JAS).

In 1891 Alfred Edward, a steam engine fitter, his wife Mary and their sons were living at Blackbourn's Buildings, 2 Victoria Street, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire.

Alfred snr. has not yet been traced after the 1891 Census but Mary and her two sons had returned to Nottingham by 1901 and were living at 23 Livingstone Terrace. Mary was married but head of household and working as a charwoman while Alfred was a printer (general) and Henry was at school.

Alfred George (22), a printer, of 4 Friar Gate, Nottingham, married Edith Hemm (20, b. 1886), also of Fisher Gate, at Nottingham St Mary on 15 June 1907. They had two sons, Alfred Edward birth registered 1908 (JFM) and Leonard George birth registered 1910 (JFM). In 1911 Alfred, a label puncher, Edith and their two sons were living at 4 Woodland Grove Colwick. Alfred and Edith were living at 30 Kimberley Street, Nottingham, in 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled. He was still working as a label puncher but his wife was described as 'incapacitated'. Edith died in January 1946; the probate record gave her address as 2 Owen Street, Nottingham. Her husband Alfred, a storekeeper, was her executor. Alfred probably died in 1983.

Alfred George's brother, Henry, a toilet roll maker (Boots Printing), was living with their paternal grandfather, Alfred Sladen (67), who was still working as a lace maker, and his wife Ellen (Helen), at 53 Pierrepont Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham in 1911. Also in the home were their daughter Gladys May, a book stitcher (Boots Printing), a granddaughter, Elsie Freeman (14), and a male boarder.

Ellen Sladen died in 1920 aged 69 and was buried on 9 October. Her husband Alfred died in 1932 aged about 87 and was buried on 10 February.

Henry Sladen married Eliza Annie Browitt (b. September 1883), the daughter of Henry and Ellen Browitt, in 1913 (AMJ). There were probably no children of the marriage.

Henry and Ellen Browitt (née Brittan m. 1882) had eight children, four of whom died in infancy or early childhood. Seven of their eight children were: Eliza Ann-sic b. Sept. 1883, John Henry b. 1886, Sarah Ann b. 1889 d. 1889, Annie b. 1890 d. 1892, Elizabeth b. 1892, May b. 1896 bap. July 1896 d. 1899 and Harry b. 1889.

A notice of Henry Sladen's death in the local newspaper in 1918 gave his widow’s address as 16 Player Street, Radford, which was probably the home of her widowed father.

Ellen Browitt had died in September 1917 and her husband Henry died in April 1941. Their daughter Eliza Sladen never remarried and died on 20 January 1947 aged 63. She was buried in Nottingham General Cemetery.
