Joseph Radford (junior) was born in 1899 at Holloway near Matlock, Derbyshire, he was the son of Joseph Radford (senior) a hosiery maker and Sarah Jane Radford née Steeples of Holloway village, Derbyshire. His father Joseph Radford (senior) was born in 1859 at Holloway, his mother Sarah Jane Steeples was born in 1865 at Swanwick, Derbyshire, they were married on 4th April 1891 at Ashover, Derbyshire, they had 4 children. In the 1911 census the family are living at Holloway village, Joseph 52 yrs is a hosiery maker, he is living with his wife Sarah Jane 46 yrs and their sons Robert 19 yrs a professional musician, William Henry 15 yrs a music student and Joseph 12 yrs a scholar. He was the husband of Ada Radford and they lived at 11 Duke Street Sutton in Ashfield.

Military History

Private Joseph Radford enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Sutton in Ashfield, he served initially with the service number 30908 in the Leicestershire Regiment, he was serving with the 2nd battalion Essex Regiment when he was killed in action on 20th April 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France
