Family history

Ralph William Marson was born in 1892 at Upper Broughton, he was the son of George Henry Marson a baker and Elizabeth Marson née Price of Upper Broughton,

His father George Henry was born in 1862 at Long Clawson, Leicestershire, his mother Elizabeth Price was born in 1868 at Keyworth they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 7 children, sadly 1 was t die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Cross Green, Upper Broughton, George Henry 49 yrs is a baker he is living with his wife Elizabeth 43 yrs and their children Telford Frank 18 yrs a domestic gardener, John 17 yrs a domestic gardener, Annie 16 yrs a domestic nurse maid, George 14 yrs a buchers errand boy, and Frederick Ellice 10 yrs a scholar.

In the same 1911 census we find that Ralph William Marson has left the family home, he is living at Gumley, Market Harborough, he is aged 19 yrs and is a gardener he is living with with his aunt Annie Platts 46 yrs and uncle William Platts 42 yrs a farm baliff at Gumley Foxton .

Military history

Private Ralph William Marson attested on 10th December 1915 at Ilkston, giving his address as Sutton Bonnington, he was 24 yrs and 8 months old, he was a gardener, his next of kin was his father George of Upper Broughton he was posted to the reserves and was mobilised on 16th February 1916 at Derby, he was posted with the service number 35763 into the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he landed in France on 20th October 1916 on 31st October 1916 he was transferred to the 2nd battalion West Yorks Regiment. he was returned to England on 12th January 1917 due to problems with his feet. On 26th October 1917 he was transferred to the Labour Corps, and returned to France on 30th July 1917. He died of influenza on 21st September 1918 and is buried at St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.
