Family history

George Elliott was born in 1889 at Barnsley the son of John a coal miner and Ellen Elliott nee Moore of 23 Vernon Road Kirkby in Ashfield.

John was born in 1851 at Pinxton, Ellen Moore was born in 1857 also at Pinxton, married in 1875 at Mansfield, they had 10 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood

George married Elsie Haycox (born 4th March 1890) on 20th December 1913 at the Wesleyan Chapel, Kirkby in Ashfield, they lived at Park Street, Kirkby in Ashfield.

Commencing 25th September 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 10 shillings a week.

Military history

Private George Elliott enlisted on 3rd September 1914 at Hucknall, giving his age as 25 yrs and 130 days and his occupation as that of a miner his next of kin was his wife Elsie. He landed in France on 14th July 1915. He was admitted to a casualty clearing station on 4th March 1916 with a gun shot wound to his abdomen, he died of his wounds on 6th March 1916 buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
